Fitness Friday // Listen to Your Body

This week was definitely a different kind of a week.  It was crazy busy at work gearing up for today’s launch but I was also dealing with an injury?

I’m not sure what happened, but my ankle has been bothering me a bit for the last week or two.  It was never so bad that I thought anything more than maybe I slept funny or stepped wrong and it’s just a little angry.  Well a little angry has turned into pretty angry and I’ve been icing, elevating and compressing it all week.  I’m not sure if we’re getting anywhere but I really don’t want to go to the doctor for it…

Well because of all of that, I also took it easy on my workout this week.  This was what should have been the first week of Phase 3 of the Live Fit program and they even say if you’re joints are bothering you, back off as needed.  So I did.  It’s good to listen to your body and give it rest when it needs it and then test it as it’s ready.

I decided today it was ready to be tested.  I went to the gym after work and got in some good shoulders and chest, but my ankle was feeling weak and I knew better than to try cardio or anything that might strain it and took it as my cue to leave.  Injury just isn’t worth it.

I thought I’d also take a moment to share my sprint workout from Sunday.  I was originally concerned how the sprints might play out, but after this workout was complete, I felt amazing!

I adapted a different sprint treadmill workout that said to do 30 seconds sprints at 8, recover for 30 seconds, and repeat this cycle for 30 minutes.  I didn’t think I could do that.  Maybe on a good day, but I knew my lungs weren’t up to it that day and decided to come up with something that I could handle and would keep me from getting too frustrated.

And like I said, this workout made me feel amazing!  I love how after sprinting at 7, my 5.7 jog felt sloooow!  It was definitely a reminder that I should work on my speed more often! 🙂

    How was the launch? How awesome is the gen 3 iPad? Was anyone mean?

    • The launch was amazing and the iPad is gorgeous and amazing! (Did we expect anything different?! 😉 ) And no one was mean…to me at least. Overall, I’d call it a good day.

    That’s great you’re limiting yourself because as you said, it’s very important to listen to your body. I know it’s frustrating having an injury that keeps you from doing something you love. As hard as it may be to deal with, it didn’t stop you! Your determination is inspiring. But, you definitely need to be careful. Do/did you have any swelling? Where does it specifically hurt?

    • I’m definitely taking it easy but I’m also figuring out my limits. There isn’t really any swelling but taking a closer look there’s a vein that’s kinda puffy? And it hurts in this ring right around my ankle…if that makes any sense…

        Do you remember having any swelling at all, once you initially knew it was hurt? Does it hurt around on the inside or outside of your ankle; left or right side when you’re looking down at it? Which foot by the way? Apology for all the questions…

      • left foot. and both sides, but mostly on the inside (right) and I’ve never noticed swelling. I feel like we’re solving a mystery… 😉

    That’s exactly what we’re doing. Ok, sorry I’m going to get technical on you with some random anatomy jargon, but those two large bony landmarks on the inside and outside of the foot we call our “ankle” is the medial malleolus and lateral malleolus respectfully. Well, our ankle joint has a lot of muscles and tendons intersecting each other around these bony structures, to make a very unique joint. And when we roll our ankle, we put too much tension on those tendons. It stinks, but tendons have very little blood and oxygen flow, so of course, what we all don’t like, time to heal is longer than regular muscle. So it sounds like just a minor sprain. But keep taking care of it though, like icing, elevating, wrapping, and so on. I know it’s hard, but try to take it easy and try not to run or jog on it, just to be on the safe side. I’m not a doctor by any means, so if it continues to bother you in a week or two, definitely get it checked out! Hope that helped!
